It’s been a historic season for Schuylerville High School soccer, as both the boys and girls varsity teams captured Section 2 Class B championships, bringing home two sectional titles in one week’s time. Led by head coaches Dave Gauci (boys) and Paul Rogan (girls), both teams secured their championships in overtime victories. Following their championship wins, team captains came together to reflect on their remarkable seasons, the hard work and determination behind their success, and the example they hope to set for younger student-athletes.
For the girls, the championship marked a historic first for the program. After falling to Mechanicville in last year’s sectional final, the Black Horses returned this season determined to finish what they started, defeating the Red Raiders 1-0 in double overtime.

“It was our plan all along,” said senior Alex Hill. “We wanted to make it to the finals again this year, and it just happened that we were against Mechanicville again. We really took it to heart and said, ‘We’re winning this year.’”
The championship-winning goal was scored by Vaughn Reilly.
“We were just really leaning on each other as a team,” said Reilly. “We had to keep pushing and keep fighting for it, because we knew we really wanted it.”
Teammate Ashlyn Abrami echoed that sentiment, reflecting on the excitement of celebrating the victory together.
“We’ve worked so hard the whole season,” said Abrami. “We’re such a close-knit group, and it was just so great to experience it with everyone and celebrate.”
For the boys, a 1-0 overtime victory over Broadalbin-Perth secured their first sectional championship since 2019, continuing the program’s tradition of success.

Colden Harrison said the team understood the challenge ahead, particularly after splitting its two regular-season matchups with Broadalbin-Perth.
“We had to train hard because we knew we had a big game,” said Harrison. “We just had to want it more and we came out on top.”
“I’m proud of the hard work and dedication our team has put in throughout the season,” added Dean Barraclough. “To see it pay off with a sectional title is an extremely satisfying feeling.”
Beyond the championship titles, both teams recognize the significance of their accomplishments and the example they are setting for younger student-athletes throughout the district.
“I like to set a high bar and inspire younger girls to think that they can do it as well,” Hill said. “I think this accomplishment will hopefully inspire younger girls to play and try out.”
Thomas Tyler shared that perspective, noting the contributions of younger players throughout the regular season.
“Some of them were on the team this year, and they really stepped up,” Tyler said. “It’s nice to be able to inspire some people.”
That commitment to developing younger players and building a strong team culture has been central to both programs.

Hill credited Coach Paul Rogan with fostering an environment where players support one another both on and off the field.
“Paul really encourages us to be a family,” said Hill. “He encourages us to have team dinners and do team activities together. I think his leadership helps us become one.”
Similarly, Harrison praised Coach Dave Gauci for his support and guidance throughout the season.
“We just love Coach Gauchi,” said Harrison. “He’s really supportive and we are thankful for him. I’m proud of my team, and I’m proud of the girls too. I’m so glad that we could bring both titles home.”
