Schuylerville Board of Education appoints Mark Brooks as new high school principal

Mark Brooks

The Schuylerville Central School District is pleased to announce Mark Brooks was appointed as the new principal of Schuylerville High School at the May 12 Board of Education meeting. He will officially assume the role on July 1, succeeding current principal James Ducharme, who has served since 2017. Mr. Ducharme has accepted a position as Superintendent of Cambridge Central School District.

Brooks emerged as the unanimous first-choice candidate of both the 14-member interview committee and the Schuylerville Board of Education’s interview. His proven track record of student-centered leadership, academic innovation, and community engagement made him a standout throughout the interview process.

With more than two decades in education and 17 years in leadership roles, Brooks currently serves as the 7–12 Principal at Broadalbin-Perth Central School District, a position he has held since 2015. Prior to that, he was the Assistant Principal at Guilderland High School for five years. His career began in the classroom, where he taught social studies in both Schenectady and Highland.

Brooks is known for implementing programs that drive student achievement and support student well-being, including the creation of the Broadalbin-Perth Patriot Academy and the Pathways Alternative Education Program. He has also prioritized faculty development, establishing professional learning communities that promote teacher collaboration—something he views as essential to student success.

“Mark Brooks brings a tremendous depth of experience and a genuine passion for student success,” said Superintendent Dr. Ryan Sherman. “His collaborative leadership style, commitment to academic excellence, and strong focus on relationships make him an ideal fit for Schuylerville. We’re excited to welcome him to our school community.”

“We are proud to appoint an experienced and accomplished leader like Mr. Brooks to this critical role,” said Board of Education President, Bernie Buff. “Maintaining continuity of experienced leadership is essential to supporting our students and staff, and we’re confident that Mr. Brooks will build on the strong foundation already in place.”

A graduate of The College of Saint Rose, Brooks holds an Advanced Certificate in School Leadership, a Master’s Degree in Teacher Education (History), and a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education (History). He is certified as a School Building Leader and in Social Studies 7–12.

In recognition of his leadership, Brooks received the NYSEC Administrator of Excellence Award in 2019 and has helped guide Broadalbin-Perth to NYSPHSAA School of Distinction honors from 2018 through 2024. He also serves on several professional committees, including the NYSPHSAA Central Committee and the Section 2 Executive Committee.

“Schuylerville’s commitment to academic excellence and student growth aligns perfectly with my educational philosophy,” said Brooks. “I am eager to bring my passion, experience, and leadership to this remarkable school community.”
