Schuylerville alumni speak at NYS FFA convention

At the annual New York State FFA Convention, two former Schuylerville agricultural education students, Emily Tavares and Taylor Barraclough, spoke in front of a crowd of more than 3,500 attendees. Tavares opened the segment by introducing her friend and former classmate, Taylor Barraclough, who was giving her retiring address as the current NYS FFA Vice President.

“Emily’s introduction painted a vivid picture of who Taylor is—not just as a leader, but as a person,” said Schuylerville High School Principal James Ducharme. “Her words struck an emotional chord, setting the tone for what would be a remarkable moment on the convention stage.”

Barraclough then delivered a speech centered on resiliency, dedication, inspiration, and leadership. Over the last year, she has been a powerful voice for agricultural education—meeting with legislators, advocating for students, and participating in meetings with the governor. Her efforts have left a meaningful impact on both the state and the national FFA communities.

“Taylor’s retiring address marks the end of an incredible year of service and leadership,” said Mary Foote, Schuylerville Ag Teacher and FFA Advisor. “It’s a chance to reflect on everything Taylor has accomplished and the legacy she leaves behind as she passes the torch to the next generation of FFA leaders.”

During the convention, Barraclough was inducted into the inaugural class of the NY FFA & Agricultural Education Hall of Fame. This prestigious honor recognizes individuals who have made transformative contributions to FFA in New York. As the 2024 National Proficiency Winner in Equine Science Entrepreneurship, Barraclough is only the second student from New York to receive this national honor in the past 30–40 years.

“Both Emily and Taylor reminded us how far hard work and dedication can go,” said Principal Ducharme. “These young adults are proof of the lasting impact FFA can have in shaping tomorrow’s leaders.”
