Schuylerville 4th graders explore history through new graphic novel

Saratoga 250, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting awareness, education, and preservation of critical assets of the Battles of Saratoga, is helping Schuylerville students connect with history in a big way. On Sept. 26, members of the Revolutionary War Surrender Day committee presented every 4th grader with a copy of Overhearing History by Anne Clothier. The graphic novel brings the American Revolution to life through the eyes of a 12-year-old living in 1775, helping students to see history as a living story, rather than just dates and names.

Author Anne Clothier, in full Revolutionary War-era clothing, shared a short reading with the classes. The Surrender Day committee also spoke to students about the upcoming commemoration events and the importance of Saratoga’s role in America’s fight for independence. The effort is part of Saratoga 250’s broader mission to support education, engagement, and preservation as the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution nears.

After reading the book, students will see history outside the classroom as well; on Oct. 17, the 4th grade will participate in Surrender Day at Fort Hardy Park, where they’ll witness the reenactments and activities that bring to life the momentous surrender of 1777.

“Our students were so excited to receive these books,” said 4th grade teacher Pete Carner. “Overhearing History makes the American Revolution feel real and relatable. In addition, having a story told through the eyes of someone their own age really helps them connect to the material in a meaningful way.”
