Class of 2029 welcomed with inspiration at freshman transition event

Schuylerville High School’s annual freshman transition summer event provided members of the Class of 2029 with an exciting opportunity to explore the building, connect with peers, and prepare for the upcoming school year. Students toured the high school, learned about pathways to graduation, and heard a powerful message from guest speaker Brandon Lee White, an author and nationally recognized motivational speaker.

Brandon White speaks with students at the freshman transition event.

White, who was born unable to speak, shared his journey of transformation from outcast to school president and detailed his six-year battle with depression. Today, he travels across the country empowering students with his signature program, Own It: The Three-Step Process. His framework encourages young people to:

  • Build Character: Choosing what’s truly important over what’s deceivingly urgent.
  • Develop Skills: Cultivating self-awareness, setting goals, creating vision, and communicating effectively.
  • Impact People: Using relational leadership to strengthen mental health and overcome life’s challenges.

White’s message resonated deeply with students, who were encouraged to embrace their potential and support one another as they begin their high school journey.

“Nobody looked at me as a kid and thought, ‘He’ll be a motivational speaker someday.’ But here I am,” White told students. “Always try to get better—and help others be better.”

The day concluded with a mix of learning and fun, including a special ballroom dance workshop led by White. Students practiced positive communication and teamwork, all while having fun and building new connections with their peers. The session offered a creative, engaging way to “break the ice” and get students interacting with one another.

“This event is all about making our incoming freshmen feel welcomed, supported, and excited for the opportunities ahead,” said High School Principal Mark Brooks. “Hearing Brandon’s story and message set the perfect tone for the Class of 2029 as they begin their high school journey.”

“The combination of learning, team building, and fun gave students a chance to connect with one another in meaningful ways before the first day of school,” added Assistant Principal Nate Kocak. “We’re confident the Class of 2029 will carry these lessons with them and continue to support each other as they grow into leaders here at Schuylerville.”
