Dozens of Schuylerville High School students took the time to recognize their teachers on Teacher Appreciation Day, celebrated May 8. Student Council members invited their classmates to write a note of thanks to any teacher during lunch periods. The notes were hung on a banner displayed in the staff room and will be delivered to individual teachers this week.
Student Council members also invited their classmates to nominate an administrator, teacher, or staff member to be honored for making a difference in his or her life through an anonymous essay. At a teacher appreciation event on May 8, Courtney Tavares, a high school special education teacher, was recognized. The winning essay was shared (see below) and Tavares received a gift of thanks from Student Council.
“Mrs. Tavares exemplifies everything a teacher should be and more. She does everything within her power to help her students on a daily basis, whether that means being someone for them to talk to or simply finding a way to put a smile on their face when she can tell it is needed. Her room is an inviting place where everyone is welcome and accepted for who they are. No matter how difficult my day has been, I know that my worries will fade away from the moment I walk through her door. Mrs. Tavares pushes every student to exceed their own expectations and reach their true potential. Her humor and happy spirit continue to inspire me to be a better version of myself every single day. I am confident that every student of hers feels the same way as I do. Seeing her go to great lengths to help students everyday motivates me to help others whenever I am presented the chance. I am extremely grateful for Mrs. Tavares and everything she has done to help me become not only a better student, but a better person as well.”
