Five Schuylerville High School students are currently serving as student representatives on the Hudson River Community Advisory Group (CAG). Freya Birkas-Dent, Sidney Gregorek, Samantha Ellis, Violet Smith and Alice Voell-White, who are all members of the Schuylerville Environmental Club, were recommended by advisor Emily Flores. The group attends quarterly meetings with federal, state, and local leaders reviewing the work of the EPA as it oversees GE’s PCB clean-up efforts. On Thursday, March 29 the meeting the students attended held special importance as the new EPA Region 2 Administrator, Pete Lopez, was in attendance to introduce himself and to listen to the questions and concerns raised by the CAG members, as well as the general public.
“We weren’t here when the problem was created, but we are experiencing the effects,” said Birkas-Dent and Gregorek. “We consider this an important way to be a part of the longevity of our community.”
