Sixth grade class uses Google Apps to collaborate with students in Vietnam

Schuylerville Middle School students in Laurie Guyon’s sixth grade ELA class are partnering with a school in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on a poetry project. Mrs. Guyon met Abena Bailey, a sixth grade ELA teacher at the Saigon South International School (SSIS), during an online Google Apps for Education chat. They decided to work together on a project-based learning experience.

Over the next few weeks, students in both schools will explore poetry together through interviews, art projects and the book “Love that Dog,” by Sharon Creech. The project will include a research unit where students will interview family members and learn about their own heritage. The final project will be to research countries from around the world.

“I think it will be a fantastic learning experience for the students and teachers, from both sides of the globe,” Guyon said.

Below is a video Guyon’s class created to introduce the students at SSIS to Schuylerville.

“The video is a great way for the students to introduce themselves, begin to build relationships and compare and contrast our daily lives,” Guyon said.
