K-5 students participate in veggie eating challenge

Students with coupons for eating veggiesSchuylerville Elementary students participated in a “Get Caught Eating Your Veggies” contest as not only a fun challenge, but also as a way to introduce new and local vegetables that will be on the school lunch menu.

For three days, faculty and staff kept their eyes on students’ lunch trays, keeping track of who was “caught” eating veggies. Roasted chickpeas, NY potatoes and kale chips were some of the choices; veggies from home counted too, for students who brought lunch! Coupons were handed to each student “caught”; the class from each grade with the most coupons earned an ice cream party donated by King Dairy.

“Vegetables are such an important part of child nutrition,” said Sarah Keen, Food Services Manager. “This was a great motivation for our students to try some different food choices and be excited about it at the same time!”
