High-risk sports/select middle and high school co-curriculars restarted

Dear Schuylerville families,

Late Friday afternoon, Jan. 22, school districts across the state and the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) were notified that high-risk sports could commence, pending local Department of Health approval. As a result, the New York State Department of Health has updated its Interim Guidance for Sports and Recreation during the COVID-19 public health emergency. This is good news for our student-athletes who have missed out on several months of interscholastic sports.

Athletics

Low and moderate-risk sports have been active during the traditional winter sports season. We do have many hurdles to navigate at the league and Section 2 level, but we as a district are committed to providing our students a safe season! Section 2 will be providing the start and end dates for the winter, fall 2, and spring sports seasons this week. There will be a mandatory Google Meet for student athletes, parents, coaches, and school administrators to discuss the upcoming seasons and updated health and safety protocols that will be implemented.

Winter sports additions

  • Cheerleading
  • Boys and Girls JV/Varsity Basketball
  • Wrestling

Modified sports will not be offered for the winter season. Students who intend to participate in the sports listed above must go to FamilyID and register by Friday, Jan. 29.

Clubs and Activities

The announcement regarding athletics brings the opportunity for us to also restart medium and high risk clubs and activities at the middle and high school levels, including those in the art and music departments. At this time, no offsite travel, visitors, guests or speakers will be permitted. All health and safety regulations must be strictly adhered to. Meetings will be held virtually to the extent possible. *The elementary school will be evaluating its current list of postponed co-curriculars and communicating any changes that are made.

Building principals will begin working with our staff to begin preparation for the following clubs and activities:

  • MS Robotics
  • HS Environmental Club
  • MS Environmental Club
  • Quiz Team
  • SADD Advisor
  • Junior FBLA
  • MS Art Club
  • HS Art Club
  • French Club
  • Spanish Club
  • GSA
  • MS Art Club
  • HS Select Choir
  • MS Jazz Band

Music

Building principals will be meeting with the music department about upcoming spring performances, including middle school small group ensembles in lieu of an in-person concert. The goal is to provide full participation access for remote and hybrid students. The district is also reinstating the high school’s Select Choir and the middle school’s Jazz Band. The commencement of all clubs and activities will start remotely; a return to in-person meetings will continue to be evaluated.

Drama Productions

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the 2020-21 middle school and high school drama productions have been cancelled. However, preparation is underway for the fall 2021 high school production and spring 2022 middle school production to be reinstated.

More information will be provided as we prepare school protocols for the reinstatement of athletics and extracurricular activities. Providing participation opportunities for all students is our goal, and the health and safety will always be the first priority. Thank you for your patience, flexibility and continued support.
