District urges parents to sign up for sex offender alerts

The Schuylerville Central School District has received a notification from NY-ALERT that a Level 2 sex offender recently moved into an area located within the district boundaries. In most cases, The New York State Department of Criminal Justice’s sex offender website lists offenders names, aliases, addresses, photos and details of the convictions.

Schuylerville parents and community members are encouraged to sign up to receive alerts regarding sex offenders who take up residence in the school district. If you’d like to receive the notifications (which can be sent via e-mail, text message or fax), please go to the NY-Alert Civilians Portal website and complete the registration and verification process. Please note that this is a broad-based alert system, which includes signing up for weather and other emergency-type alerts. The option to receive alerts about sex offenders is an option you can choose after you proceed through the first few screens during the registration process.

The dissemination of information about convicted sex offenders was part of the Sex Offender Registration Act, more commonly known as Megan’s Law. The law requires sex offenders convicted of certain specified crimes to register with the state and that communities be alerted to their presence whenever possible.

Convicted sex offenders are classified using a three-tier system – Level 1 (low risk for re-offending), Level 2 (moderate risk) or Level 3 (highest risk). The risk level assignment determines how much notification is given to the public and/or law enforcement agencies.
