Curriculum & Instruction


The Schuylerville Central School District believes that curriculum should support our students’ needs and prepare each student to be life-long learners. The curriculum is adapted to incorporate creativity while maintaining the rigor required by New York State. The NYS standards at Schuylerville are met with differentiated learning opportunities for our students, leading to success.

ELA

Grades K-2

  • The Core Knowledge Language Arts program, which includes a Skills Strand and the Knowledge Domains.
  • The Knowledge Domains activities build students’ language comprehension ability and exposes them to rich vocabulary, concepts and ideas through frequent read-alouds.
  • The Skills Strand builds students’ words-reading skills.

Grades 3-5

  • The district uses an adapted version of Teacher’s College Readers and Writers Workshop.
  • The focus is reading closely for textual details, making evidence-based claims, researching to deepen understanding, and building evidence-based arguments.

Grades 6-8

  • A teacher-developed curriculum that aligns with the Next Generation Learning Standards.
  • The focus is reading closely for textual details, making evidence-based claims, researching to deepen understanding, and building evidence-based arguments.

Grades 9-12

  • A teacher-developed curriculum that aligns with the Next Generation Learning Standards.
  • The focus is reading closely for textual details, making evidence-based claims, researching to deepen understanding, and building evidence-based arguments.
  • Teachers work to implement inquiry-based research projects to promote student-centered learning.

Math

Grades K-5

  • SAVVAS Envisions Math Program.

Grades 6-8

  • SAVVAS Envisions Math Program.

Grades 9-12

  • A teacher-developed curriculum that aligns with the Next Generation Learning Standards.
  • Algebra I students use the SAVVAS Envisions Math Program.

Science

Grades K-5

  • A teacher-developed curriculum that aligns with the NYS Science Learning Standards.
  • A focus on engaging, hands-on learning activities and the incorporation of the NYS Investigations.

Grades 6-8

  • SAVVAS Elevate Science Program.
  • A focus on engaging, hands-on learning activities and the incorporation of the NYS Investigations.

Grades 9-12

  • A teacher-developed curriculum that aligns with the NYS Science Learning Standards and the NYS Regents Exams in Earth Science, Living Environment, Chemistry, and Physics.

Social Studies

Grades K-5

  • A teacher-developed curriculum that aligns with the NYS Social Studies Framework.

Grades 6-8

  • A teacher-developed curriculum that aligns with the NYS Social Studies Framework.
  • Adoption of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt materials to support instructional activities.

Grades 9-12

  • A teacher-developed curriculum that aligns with the NYS Social Studies Framework and the NYS Regents Exams in Global History & Geography and U.S. History & Government.
  • Adoption of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt materials to support instructional activities.

Physical Education

Grades K-5

  • Emphasis on developing motor skills, movement concepts, and promoting healthy physical activity and fitness.
  • Students are taught personal and social behavior that promotes self-respect and respect for others.

Fine Arts

Grades 9-12

  • Art medias include drawing, painting, 3D design, photography, and mixed media.

Music

Grades 9-12

  • Course opportunities include Chorus, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Recording Studio, and Adaptive Music.

Agriculture

Grades 9-12

  • Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) utilized to develop course curriculum.
  • Emphasis on food, animal, and plant science.
  • Opportunities to develop agricultural and business marketing skills.
  • Introductory-level experience offered with Agricultural Mechanics technology.

Business

Grades 9-12

  • Opportunities to learn accounting, law, and sports entertainment.
  • Opportunities to earn SUNY Adirondack course credit.

Technology

Grades 9-12
