Grade 9 summer letter

Dear 9th Grade Students and Parents/Guardians,

I hope you are enjoying a nice summer.  It’s hard to believe that the start of the new school year is right around the corner! Today we are excited to release students’ schedules for the 2021-22 school year. Our school counselors have been working extensively to balance courses, reduce class sizes, and meet the academic needs of our students as they plan for their future.

Freshman Transition Day

To assist students in their transition to high school, we have scheduled a Freshman Transition Day on Tuesday, August 24 from 8:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  We are excited to bring you this full-day program that will include a return visit from Sweethearts & Heroes, a national program that educates youth on the impact of bullying, builds empathy and compassion while developing young leaders.

Our transition event will provide students with the opportunity to tour the building, set up lockers, and meet key staff while working with the team from Sweethearts & Heroes. We will be providing all students with lunch during the event.   This has always been a great opportunity for our incoming 9th grade students to acclimate to the high school prior to the first day of school.

Chromebooks

Schuylerville High School is excited to continue its 1:1 device initiative; this year we will be transitioning from iPads to Chromebooks.  While students have been working with an iPad for the past three years of middle school, with the infusion of Google products that students utilize, the district is moving to a device that will streamline technology platforms. Students will receive their Chromebooks as part of the Aug. 24 event to ensure they will have them for the beginning of the school year.

Scheduling

To meet the demand of balancing class sizes, please be aware that schedule changes to request a preferred teacher or to move a scheduled lunch period will not be entertained.  Students are to be scheduled for at least 6 credits to stay on track for graduation; the Schuylerville Central School District requirement is 24 credits for graduation. If students are interested in adding courses to their schedule or to make a schedule change, please utilize the Schedule Change Request Form.  In the coming weeks, study hall will be added to schedules in any open periods. If you have any questions about your student’s schedule, please reach out to their school counselor.

Materials/Supplies

Student supplies vary by teacher and grade level. A comprehensive list by teacher is available on the school district website. For the 2021-22 school year, we will continue to allow students to utilize a clear bookbag/backpack to carry their supplies during the school day. We will have a limited number available for purchase in the main office if you are interested.

Additional Information

Please complete the following forms and return them to the appropriate office by September 17. This information will help us promote the health and safety of your student during the coming school year; thank you in advance for your prompt attention to them. (Copies of these forms are included in the mailing that 9th grade families will receive the week of July 26.)

In preparation for the increased level of activity that accompanies the start of the school year, I encourage parents to mark their calendars for high school student picture days on September 14 and 15, as well as the High School Open House on Tuesday, September 21.

As the summer continues, the district is awaiting guidance from the NYS Department of Health and State Education Department for the 2021-22 school year in regard to COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Information will be sent to families as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you on August 24 and working with you throughout the  school year to ensure that you enjoy an outstanding 9th grade experience.  If you have any questions, please contact the High School Main Office at 518-695-3255 ext. 2232.

Sincerely,

James Ducharme
Schuylerville High School Principal
