Schuylerville students recognized for community service
work
Four Schuylerville seniors—Christine Bonesteel, Holly
Rippon-Butler, Jonna Freeman and Schuyler Thomas—were
recently recognized by the district’s Board of Education
for their outstanding community service work. Freeman
was further recognized by the Saratoga County School
Boards Association for her commitment to volunteer
service.
Christine’s community service projects include
co-founding a local Cinderella's Closet to collect
donations of formal wear so her classmates could "attend
the prom feeling confident and beautiful." She has also
taken steps to involve the district in activities for
Special Olympics, along with participating in the
American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, coaching youth
soccer and volunteering for her church and Meals on
Wheels. She has also been involved with such
school-based service clubs as WAVE (Working Against
Violence Everywhere) and MAESTRO (Musicians Aiding
Everyone, Serving Together and Reaching Others).
Holly’s community service projects are varied, including
co-founding a homework help program at Schuylerville
Public Library, mentoring a ninth-grade student and
acting as a peer mediator in the district’s WAVE
program. She has used her musical skills as part of the
Saratoga Springs Youth Orchestra’s concerts for senior
citizens. In addition, Holly has volunteered her time at
the Wesley Nursing Home and the Schuyler Guest Home, as
well as participating in the Saratoga Springs Public
Library’s Summer Reading Program. She has also engaged
in service projects for her church and volunteered for
the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
Jonna’s volunteer work is impressive, as well. She has
been an instructor for SABAH (a skating association for
people with vision impairments and other handicapping
conditions) and a volunteer for the Make-A-Wish
Foundation. Holly has also participated in numerous
fundraising activities for victims of Hurricane Katrina,
collected monetary and food donations for church food
pantries and has been a Relay for Life volunteer. In addition,
she has been a peer leader in her church, participated
in holiday caroling activities for the elderly in the
community and worked as part of a jail ministry to aid
children whose parents are incarcerated.
Schuyler Thomas is another of the many Schuylerville
students who are committed to helping out in the local
and global communities. He is a counselor at Double H
Hole in the Woods Ranch, a camp for children who have
serious illnesses or life-threatening conditions and a
volunteer for Rebuilding Together Saratoga County, an
organization that rehabilitates homes for elderly,
disabled and low-income citizens. Schuyler also gives
his time at the Equinox Annual Thanksgiving Day
community dinners in various projects for the
Schuylerville Community Theater. Additionally, he has
participated on book drives for the Elementary School
library, helped host community teen Halloween parties,
participated in the March for Parks at Saratoga National
Historical Park, as well as engaged in numerous
volunteer projects for his church.
