Schuylerville Social Studies
Teacher Passes Away

Peter Hume |
It is
with great sadness that Schuylerville School District
shares news of the death of senior high school social
studies teacher Peter Hume. Peter passed away in his
sleep last night. He was 54 years old.
The
entire Schuylerville community will mourn the loss of
this very special teacher and friend. Peter dedicated
his life to teaching, having worked with students at
Schuylerville Jr.-Sr. High School since 1999; he also
completed an administrative internship at the school
during the 1993-94 school year, and taught at
Stillwater, Shenendehowa, Voorheesville and Troy.
Upon
hearing news of Peter’s passing, Schuylerville’s crisis
team immediately met to develop a plan to help students
and teachers cope with this terrible loss. At
approximately 9 a.m., members of the administrative team
and the student services team circulated to all Jr.-Sr.
High School classes to inform students. The library was
designated as a crisis center and counseling staff are
present to provide support. Many students are taking
advantage of this safe environment to grieve with their
friends and classmates. The district will continue to
make this support available as long as necessary.
The
district is also sending a letter home to inform parents
of the situation and to encourage them to give their
children an opportunity to talk about how they are
feeling. Additionally, all after school activities have
been cancelled for today (Tues., October 23, 2007).
For
more information, contact Dr. Leon Reed, Superintendent
of Schools, at 695-3255, ext. 3242.
