More than 1,000 students to celebrate Elementary
School’s Character Education Program
On Thursday, June 5, 2008, more than 1,000 Schuylerville
Elementary School students will gather together to
celebrate the success of the school’s character
education program. The celebration will include several
events, such as:
- A collection of items for the local food pantry. Each
Schuylerville Elementary School student has been asked
to bring one item to help restock the pantry, as shelves
are nearly empty during these difficult economic times.
- A gathering on the district football field
(weather-permitting) of all Schuylerville Elementary
School students and staff members at approximately 9:15
a.m. During this time, students will collect and box all
food pantry items, sing the school’s character education
song and the school song, as well as participate in the
morning television broadcast. In addition, students who
were “caught showing good character” throughout the
school will be recognized.
- Two character education assemblies (1 p.m. and 2 p.m.)
featuring professional musician and former teacher Jim
McCarthy, who specializes in developing musical programs
that reinforce positive character traits.
- Orange and black dress; students will be dressed in
district colors to show their school spirit. Character
education banners will be made representing each grade
level; students will sign the banners, showing their
commitment to positive interactions with others.
Schuylerville Elementary School’s Character Education
Program began last year with a series of activities,
including a monthly focus on character traits (respect,
integrity, citizenship, compassion, tolerance,
commitment, responsibility, resilience and
accomplishment) and a recognition program for students
“caught” displaying these characteristics. Each student
honored received a certificate and was featured in a
PowerPoint presentation that played during lunch
periods. More than 250 students were chosen for this
recognition.
“By formalizing a character education program, we’re
able to show children that positive character is as
important as good academic achievement,” explains
Schuylerville Elementary School Counselor Cassandra
Sheahan, who oversees the program. “This culmination
celebration reinforces that message. It also allows us
to come together as an entire school to celebrate the
successes we’ve seen over the school year.”
