District offers Summer Technology Camp
Schuylerville Central School District is offering a Summer Technology Program for interested students. There will be two different levels of courses offered; programs at each level are two weeks. The classes will introduce both Elementary and Jr. High School students to various topics of applied technology. Both sessions make use of “hands-on” techniques to introduce and reinforce technological concepts. Students may sign up for one or both programs. Enrollment is limited to 24 students in each class. Classes run weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please do not wear new clothes to these programs.

Level 1 Program: July 7-18, 2008
Fee: $20
Students must have completed fourth grade or higher. Work in the following four technological areas will be covered in the program:
  • Solid Modeling with AutoDesk Inventor: Students will use introductory-level skills to produce three-dimensional parts and assembly of products. Air-powered vehicles will be produced from student-generated designs.

  • Architectural Design: Students will learn to create professional-looking residential floor plans, which will show fully furnished interiors. Plans may be viewed in interior and exterior in both 2D and 3D.

  • Energy: Participants will use alternative energy sources to generate electricity. Emphasis will be on solar and wind power. Windmills will be built and tested to determine potential and limitations of alternative energy. Students will use solar cells to learn about parallel and series circuits.

  • Manufacturing: “Employees“ will man a factory that produces toolboxes. As the assembly line is running, students will learn about process control, quality control, systems and why accuracy is more important than speed.

Level II Program: July 21-Aug. 1, 2008
Fee: $20
Students should have completed sixth grade. It is important for students to attend classes each day. Work in the following technological areas will be covered:

  • Advanced Inventor: Students build on skills learned in Level I, however, Level I is not a prerequisite for this class. Students will produce sophisticated parts and products.

  • Computer Building and Network Configuration: Students will select and identify the parts of a modern personal computer system. After building the computers, students will configure operating systems and connect their computers in a peer-to-peer networking system. Networking terms, configuration and connections will be addressed through a series of practical exercises.

  • Fischertechnik Project: Students will design, build and control Fischertechnik robots. Robotics has become today’s leading-edge factory and automation technology. These robots are designed to simulate the motion of a large piece of equipment you might find in a building, factory or on a highway. Engineering design software and an interface will be used to generate the programmable motion of the Fischertechnik projects.

Enrollment for these classes is on a first-come, first-served basis with preference given to those who haven't taken the classes previously. The Summer Technology Program is open to students outside the Schuylerville School District. For more information, please call Fred Lefton or Eric Blakely at (518) 695-3255.
