Confirmed case of MRSA at Schuylerville Jr.-Sr. High
School
On February 19, 2008, Schuylerville Central School
District officials were notified that a Jr.-Sr. High
School student was diagnosed with a confirmed case of
Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). The
student is under the care of a physician.
In addition to normal cleaning methods, extra
precautionary wipe-down procedures using MRSA
disinfectants are being instituted at both Schuylerville
Elementary and Jr.-Sr. High Schools. Most importantly,
students and staff at each school are being encouraged
to wash their hands with soap and water, especially
before eating and after using sports facilities or the
restroom. In addition, school officials are making sure
administrators, teachers, school nurses, coaches and the
custodial staff have information available to protect
themselves and to share with the school population.
A letter is being sent out to all parents in the
district outlining the precautions the district is
taking. Additionally, district officials are contacting
area school districts that have had student athletes
playing at Schuylerville Jr.-Sr. High School over the
last few weeks.
“While MRSA is not currently on the New York State
Department of Health’s list of reportable diseases, we
want to extend our communications efforts beyond the
district as a courtesy,” explains Superintendent Dr.
Leon Reed.
As a further precaution, the district’s efforts also
have been reviewed by the school physician and all
facilities are open and safe for occupation by students,
staff and community members. As a result, all athletic
practices and games, including tonight’s sectional
basketball game, will be held as scheduled at
Schuylerville Jr.-Sr. High School and Schuylerville
Elementary School.
Parents or other community members who have questions
can call the district at 695-3255. Further information
is also available
here.
