Runner
commits to SUNY Albany on National Signing Day
Schuylerville senior Ethan Clary took advantage of
National Signing Day February 6 to make an athletic and
academic commitment to SUNY Albany. At Schuylerville, he
has excelled in outdoor track, indoor track and cross
country.
"This feels good," Ethan said as he signed the official
paperwork. "Albany is where I wanted to go."
Ethan will be part of the university's cross country and
track teams. The package also includes a partial
scholarship, which can increase depending on academic
achievement.
Ethan's parents, Christine and Dale Cox, were beaming as
their son signed. "This is amazing; Ethan has only been
running for three years," Dale commented.
"But once he sets his mind to something, there's no
stopping him," Christine added. "And Ethan set his mind
on Albany. We're very proud of him. He did all the work
on his own—all the college applications, essays,
paperwork and follow-up. He's been in the guidance
office every day making sure he's doing everything he
needs to do in order to get into UAlbany."
Ethan chose SUNY Albany
because he found the atmosphere appealing. "The team
members are like one big family. They have dinners
together, live near each other and support each other.
When I visited, coaches were already introducing me as
'your teammate' to the athletes," Ethan said. "It will
be like having a family while I'm away from my family at
home."
Before running, Ethan played soccer and hockey. He
blushed slightly as he admitted that an athletic trip to
Disney World prompted him to start running. There was no
stopping him after that.
In January, he was the
WASAREN league champion in the 1,000-meter, 1,600-meter
and 3,200-meter races. Last November, Ethan placed ninth
in the Class C state meet and third in cross country
sectionals.
Ethan will graduate in
June with an Advanced Regents diploma. He plans to major
in secondary education/history at SUNY Albany.
"I'd like to be a history teacher...and also to coach,"
Ethan said.
His current coach, Glenn Wolin, has no doubts about
Ethan's future success, commenting "He's getting
stronger and better and faster. Ethan's going to
surprise some people in the future; he's a good catch."
That is, if you can catch him... |
