Award Winning Children's Books
Awards indicate that many
people like a particular book. Remember, though, that your
opinion is the most important when deciding if a
book is "good." Below are some of the major awards given
to children's books.
Newbery Medal
The
Newbery Medal was named for
eighteenth-century British bookseller
John Newbery. It is awarded annually by
the Association for Library Service to
Children, a division of the American
Library Association, to the author of
the most distinguished contribution
to American literature for children.

Caldecott Medal
The
Caldecott Medal was named in honor of
nineteenth-century English illustrator
Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded
annually by the Association for Library
Service to Children, a division of the
American Library Association, to
the artist of the most distinguished
American picture book for children.

Theodor Seuss Geisel Award
The Theodor
Seuss Geisel Award
is given annually to the
author(s) and
illustrator(s) of the
most distinguished
American book for
beginning
readers published in
English in the United
States during the
preceding year. The
winner(s), recognized
for their literary and
artistic achievements
that demonstrate
creativity and
imagination to engage
children in
reading, receives a
bronze medal.
