Schuylerville Jr.-Sr. High School students have a broad range of interests, which are reflected by the number of clubs and organizations to which our pupils participate. Here's a sampling:
Grade Levels: 9-12

The Sr. High Art club is open to any student interested in creating artwork. Work can be independent, group-oriented as in collaborations, or such specific projects as pottery, digital photography, murals, fundraisers, etc. Students will have an opportunity to enter art shows and competitions, to experience art mediums they might not have a chance to use in regular school day classes, and to go on a field trip to one of the Museums of Fine Arts. The Art Club has started a permanent art collection to make our Jr.-Sr. High School more beautiful. Each year, the Art Club has a competition with everyone invited to vote on favorite art pieces. The winners are framed by the Art Club and hung around the school in the main hallways and offices.

Jr. High Book Club members read high-quality books and discuss them as a group; students are also encouraged to give “book talks” about novels they have read on their own.

C.A.R.E. stands for Community Awareness and Responsibility Enthusiasts. CARE Club’s goal is to help, whether it is within the school, community, nation or even the world. We will raise awareness of issues through investigation and education and facilitate volunteering in the student body. Projects will vary from year to year and are based upon student interest and input. In the past, students have initiated school-wide recycling programs, community clean-ups, tree plantings on our school campus, fundraisers for local families in need and the AIDS council, and participated in volunteer work at Hudson Crossings Community Park. CARE Club aims to be a place where all are welcome and everyone’s ideas are explored. In addition, it is a great place to make new friends and have some fun!

The Computer Club is for students interested in activities that relate to computers. Activities may include program use, technological developments and career options. The club will provide a positive forum in which students can be creative, innovative and marketable in their prospective area of interests.

Each year, the Drama Club alternates between performing a drama production and a musical. Students are chosen by audition for the show.

Jr. High Future Business Leaders of America Club gives junior high students an opportunity to work with peers on various activities that benefit the school community, as well as our district community. Students explore the skills that all good business leaders need while running the school bookstore each day during lunch periods and after school. Jr. High FBLA also sponsors the Ronald McDonald snack replenishment drive, the Jr. High Spring Fling and an annual trip to Great Escape. The club will continue to sponsor day trips to New York City, Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut.

The purpose of Student Council is to contribute in the life of the school, work for the school and always work with the students by providing support, aid and service for the benefit of both the school and the student. We are a leadership organization that is involved in many aspects of school and community on the local, state, regional and national levels.

Future Career and Community Leaders of America: Come join a fun, hands-on group. Participants enjoy making crafts, holiday projects, baking and community service. In the past, They’ve made holiday items, jewelry, stamping, painting, homemade teddy bears, ceramic, etc.

FFA members compete in such contests as speech, FFA creed, parliamentary procedures, agricultural communications, agricultural sales and talent. Every year in October, FFA members go to the National FFA Convention and host a chapter banquet the first Wednesday in June.

Meetings: third Thursday of each month and as needed
prepare some French dishes to enjoy (chocolate mousse and crêpes), as well as play French games including French Scrabble and Mille Bornes. French Club members also do fundraisers to finance a dinner at a local French restaurant and to make a donation to the Caring and Sharing Program in the high school. Our fundraisers include a car wash in May and the sale of French Chocolates in December.

Seventh- and eighth-grade band members may audition for the group in September. The group has a minimum of two performances per year. The Jazz Band plays swing, Latin and rock styles of music in a big-band format.

In May/June of each school year, a compilation of original literature and artwork is published. Students have an opportunity to display/present their work at the annual “coffee house” in late May. Meetings are held in early October to discuss submission requirements. Students receive all publication information in their English and art classes. Advisors are available to work individually with writers/artists. Content must be appropriate for a high school audience.

M.A.E.S.T.R.O is a community service organization open to any student participating in the Jr.-Sr. High band or chorus. This group meets with the purpose of a specific service project in mind. Please see Mrs. Leight with any questions or ideas.

MathCounts is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement in grades six through eight. At Schuylerville, students meet once a week to prepare for the local competition held at Adirondack Community College in February. Sixth-grade students meet for a shorter period of time in January and February to introduce them to MathCounts with the idea they will become active participants as seventh-graders. During this time, we practice problem-solving skills to help them increase their speed and knowledge. Since the competition is timed, this will help the students be more prepared. MathCounts is a great opportunity for students looking for a challenge!

Meetings: fourth Tuesday of each month
Math League members engage in the rigorous competition of solving challenging word problems that require the use of critical thinking skills. Participants compete with local area high schools from the Washington, Warren and Saratoga Counties. There are five meets scheduled beginning in November and ending in March with monthly gatherings in between. We end the year with a celebratory pizza party to recognize our Schuylerville mathletes!

Mock Trial is an extracurricular activity that helps students develop useful knowledge about the law, questioning techniques and advocacy skills. Mock Trial begins with a conflict or dispute between two parties that can’t be solved by either of those two parties. Students play out the roles of plaintiffs, defendants, witnesses and jurors in a real court format. Students use general rules of evidence, procedure, fact explanations and witness statements as they pursue legal proceedings. Students work with a real attorney and a teacher/advisor to further their understanding of court proceedings.

The fall Pep Band provides spirit and entertainment at the home varsity football games during the months of September and October. The Pep Band is open to all students who are enrolled in either J.r High Band or Symphonic Band. The group performs a variety of upbeat and exciting pieces from both the pop and college song catalogs.

The club's goal is to produce high-quality photographs while using the incredible digital SLR cameras provided by the district. Members have the opportunity to learn about the camera, accompanying software and printing photographs. Field trips to the Bronx Zoo in NYC and Botanical Gardens in Montreal are some of the opportunities to hone a club member’s photographic skills. In addition, club members have the opportunity to obtain course credit in photography if they are willing to make a bigger commitment to the club (60 hours – ½ credit, 120 hours – full credit).

Quiz Team is an academic team that participates in the Post Star Academic Quiz Bowl. This is a league offered by The Post Star newspaper and consists of 24 regional schools from Emma Willard in Troy to Indian Lake. Our season begins in early September and may go until March. We play a series of six games both random and matched. The games are played at Queensbury High School in a Jeopardy-type fashion. Schools that accumulate enough points participate in play-off games. The team also participates in the Viking Challenge sponsored by Hudson Valley Community College. This event takes place in early spring and is very much enjoyed by our students. The final event of the year is an academic banquet, where Quiz Team members take the opportunity to thank the players for a job well done and for representing the community of Schuylerville.

The School Store gives junior and senior high students an opportunity to work on real job skills in a school store setting. Students are provided training to check inventory, stock products, use a cash register, take and make change and interact with customers. The school store can be open during lunch periods 5, 6 and 7 depending upon the availability of club members and 10th period after school.

The Schuyler Yearbook Club gives students the opportunity to be a part of a very busy staff that creates an exciting and professional-looking publication for their classmates. Through hard work, dedication to details and the right touch of creativity students develop ideas into reality. Members meet and dabble in the art of layout, photography, journalism/creative writing, advertising and sales. Join them and help make your high school memories last forever!

Ski and Snowboard Cclub is an exciting opportunity for people of all abilities. Club members make six trips to Willard Mountain, leaving school at 3 p.m. and returning by 7:30 p.m. The first organizational meeting is held at the end of November and a fitting trip is held in December.

As a group, members discuss a variety of fundraising ideas in hopes of giving back to the community. The group’s most successful events have been the “Day of the Dead” bake sale, the “Day of the Three Kings Raffle” in January, and a food driver during Foreign Language Month in March, which helps stock the St. Theresa’s Food Pantry in Gansevoort. At the end of the year, members often share an evening of conversation and dinner at the Mexican Connection in Saratoga.

The Stampede’s goal is to produce a high-quality newspaper that appeals to students and staff alike. It highlights news, sports, student activities and achievement,s as well as entertains people with cartoons, drawings, poems, stories and more. Staff learns how to put together a professional-looking paper from start to finish. They can learn to take pictures, do graphics and put the paper together using special software. In addition, they have the opportunity to obtain course credit in journalism if they are willing to make a bigger commitment to the paper (60 hours – ½ credit, 120 hours – full credit).

The mission of Students Against Destructive Decisions is simply stated: To provide students with the best prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, impaired driving and other destructive decisions. Jr. High SADD members plan activities to send that message, such as: red ribbons at Christmas, signing of the prom promise, letters to prom attendees from elementary students encouraging them to have a safe time, Make-A-Wish, Safe Spring at Skidmore and speakers from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving).

Working Against Violence Everywhere. WAVE program works under the premise that peer leadership programs are the most effective kinds of prevention programs. WAVE’s main objectives are to reinforce violence prevention skills and to use peer mediation to resolve conflicts. Members are actively involved in promoting a safe school environment and engage in many service activities in the school and community at large.

The purpose for the Women’s and Chamber Singers is to provide opportunities for exceptional singers to expand their vocal talents. They will do this by studying vocal literature and performing in the Senior High School concerts, as well as school and community events. These are auditioned groups. The students rehearse two mornings a week for the entire school year.
