The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) Freedom in Academia Student Essay Contest: High school seniors invited to write an in-depth essay explaining why free speech and First Amendment rights are crucial to higher education and how abuses of these rights harm the college experience. First place: $10,000; second place: $5,000; runners up (three awards): $1,000; second runners up (four awards): $500. Empire State Potato Growers, Inc.: Scholarships of $500 per academic year for up to four years. Full-time academic study in the field of agriculture; eligibility also depends on academic achievement and leadership abilities. Credit Union Association of New York: Scholarships in the amount of $500 or $1,000 to member in good standing of a participating New York credit union. 2013 New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA) Major Scholarship: Four-year scholarship worth a total of $10,000.
