Beyond Schuylerville Jr.-Sr. High School
Approximately 90 percent of Schuylerville’s graduates will enter
college for additional studies. The remaining 10 percent will
enter the military for training, go on to vocational
schools or join the work force. Whatever their eventual
choice, Schuylerville students are encouraged to develop a
four-year high school plan that yields the academic
background, training and work habits that will allow them
to pursue their goals beyond high school.
The Student Services Center maintains a variety of college
and career planning resources and tools to assist students
in determining and reaching their future goals. Students
are invited to use computer software that matches skills
and interests with career opportunities. College
information software is also available, along with college
viewbooks and catalogs.

Paying for College
The cost of attending
college is getting more expensive every year. The Student
Services Center staff can provide you with information on
scholarships and financial aid programs available to help
families with college costs.
A large portion of the available financial aid for college
and vocational training comes from federal and state
governments. To qualify for this aid, students and parents
must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) in January of their senior year. The Student
Services Center maintains information and applications for
federal and State of New York financial aid programs. Some
states and colleges may require additional applications
and information, so you should make inquiries about those
programs early in the application process to obtain those
forms.

Giving Students a
High Five |
|
Program Recognizes Academic Improvement |
|
The
Jr.-Sr. High School Building Team, which is made
up of teachers, administrators, students and
parents, give students a "High Five" if they
improve their academic average by five points
from one quarter to the next quarter.
"The
team decided to do this because we were
concerned that there are students who are
putting in a tremendous amount of effort to
improve academically but may not reach the 85
average needed to be on the Merit Roll,"
explained Director of Student Services John
Haggerty. "We wanted to recognize the efforts of
the students who are making a comeback or
putting in extra effort."
Like students on the Merit, Honor and High
Honor Roll, High Five students will have their
names sent to the local newspapers and posted in
the Jr.-Sr. High School lobby. They also will
participate in recognition activities. The types
of activities differ each quarter. |

Is
your child thinking about possible careers?
Beginning the college search? If so,
Schuylerville's Student Services Center has some
tools you'll want to know about. In addition to
scholarship details and informative
publications, catalogs, videotapes, DVDs and CDs
supplied by the colleges, the Center also has a
software package called CHOICES. It is designed
to help students make decisions about their
futures.
With
CHOICES software, users enter as much
information as possible about potential college
options—for example, career areas, size of
schools, activities preferred, region where
students would like to attend college, size of
school preferred, etc. The software can help
narrow down choices from an original list of
2,000 to perhaps 30 or 40 colleges that can be
further researched.
The software is available to students in the
Jr.-Sr. High School Student Services Center and
in the computer labs. |
