Meet the Student Services
Center Staff |

John Haggerty, Director of Student Services
John
has been with the district since the 1999-2000 school
year. As the director of student services, he is
responsible for overseeing the staff in the Student
Services Center. He also is responsible for the GED
program, Advanced Placement (AP) program, Driver's
Education, and Distance Learning.
“We
have great students, families and community in
Schuylerville, as well as support from the Board of
Education.”
Before coming to Schuylerville, John worked as a guidance
counselor in the Mechanicville Central School District
for 12 years.
He
earned his administrative certificate at Massachusetts
College, and his master's degree in school
counseling at the College of St. Rose. He also attended
the Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, NY. |

Betty Armenio,
Registrar
Betty has been working at the Schuylerville School
District since 1986. Prior to becoming the district's
registrar she was a secretary at Saratoga Springs Urban
Renewal Agency.
Betty is the "record keeper" of the district. She
ensures that students' SAT scores, transcripts, Regents
and local grades are accurate and up to date. She also
writes reports for the New York State Education
Department and enrolls all new students.
Betty is a graduate of
Schuylerville Jr.-Sr. High School. |

Carrie Bean, Guidance Counselor
Carrie Bean has been a Schuylerville School Counselor
since the 2002-2003 school year. She assists students
and their families in developing educational, career and
personal goals. Carrie works closely with students to
help them choose appropriate classes and vocational
programs, as well as research colleges, careers,
and other post-secondary options. She also counsels
students with personal issues.
"The support and
collaboration from the school and community is
incredible," says
Carrie. "Schuylerville is truly a wonderful place to
work—and the kids here are the best!"
Prior to coming to the
Schuylerville School District, Carrie was a career
counselor at Sage College where she also earned her
bachelor's degree in psychology. She earned her master's degree in
guidance and counseling, as well as her post-master's
certificate at Sage Graduate School. Carrie is a 1987 graduate of
Schuylerville Jr.-Sr. High School.
"We have
approximately 250 students each and we work with them
from 9th grade up until they graduate, which is ideal," adds Carrie.
"Doing this allows us to work closely with the students and
have the opportunity to really get to know them. I love
what I do and I look forward to coming to work
everyday." |

Erin
Welch,
7th & 8th Grade Guidance Counselor
Erin has been a
guidance counselor in the Schuylerville School District
since 2003.
She is responsible for
helping students build their school schedules, providing
individual and group counseling, organizing and
overseeing career night, handling vocational
assessments, and coordinating sixth grade visitations,
among other things. Erin also is committed to working
closely with her colleagues and students' parents to
ensure Schuylerville students receive the best possible
service.
"I like working at Schuylerville because of the
students here. They are kind, generous, trustworthy,
insightful, imaginative, and they are fun. I never
imagined that I would be so lucky to be working with a
fantastic community, dedicated colleagues, and wonderful
students. "
Erin earned a bachelor's
degree in psychology (with a minor in social work)
at Plymouth State in New Hampshire, and her master's
degree in school counseling at UMass Boston. She is a
graduate of Glens Falls High School. |

John Guay, Guidance Counselor
John
has been with the district since 2002. Prior to coming
to Schuylerville, John worked at the Schenectady and
South Glen Falls school districts as a guidance
counselor.
In
his role as guidance counselor, John provides
Schuylerville students with academic advisement, course
selection assistance and educates them about the
plethora of academic programs available. He also is
responsible for helping students and families with the
college selection process. In addition, John assists
students with social and personal issues.
"Compared to the other school districts I’ve worked in,
Schuylerville gives you time to work with the students
and really get to know them. Sometimes you see them
every day, especially when they’re seniors.”
“The
resources the district and the school board give the
counselors gives us great opportunities to help the
students.”
John
earned his master's degree in guidance and school
counseling at Sage Graduate School, and his bachelor's degree at SUNY Albany. |

Debbie McCarty,
Secretary
Debbie has been working at Schuylerville since the
1999-2000 school year. Prior to coming here, she worked
at Glens Falls National Bank. She is a graduate of
Hudson Falls High School.

Janine O'Brien,
Career Education Counselor
Janine began working
for the Schuylerville School District in the 2006-07
school year. Prior to coming here she had a counseling
internship in the district's Student Services office
while she was earning her master's degree in guidance &
counseling from Sage Graduate School. Janine also has a
bachelor's degree in psychology from SUNY Albany.
As a career education counselor,
Janine is focused on helping students get a better
understanding of the types of careers that are available
to them as well as arranges for them to get "real-world"
experience through the district's internship program.
"I help students gain a better
awareness of their interests so they can make more
informed decisions about college majors or career
choices," says Janine.
Janine also is responsible for guiding
students with their career preparation. This includes
working with the students through practice interviews,
resume writing, learning how to dress for the job and
much more!
Additionally, she works with the local
business community to build partnerships for the
mentoring/internship program and to increase the
community's aware of this program. |

Karen Passalacqua,
School Psychologist
Karen began working in the district in
the 2006-07 school year. Prior to coming to
Schuylerville she was a school psychologist at the
Cornwall Central School District for five
years. Before working at Cornwall she was a mental health
worker at Four Winds in
Saratoga.
Karen, who was born and raised in
Italy, came to the United States to attend Skidmore
College where she doubled majored in psychology and
English. She went on to earn a master's degree in school
psychology at the College of Saint Rose.
As the district's
psychologist, Karen is responsible for evaluating and
assessing students to determine if they are struggling
with a learning disability, such as ADD or ADHD, or
emotional concerns. She also is responsible for
providing students with group and individual counseling
and working with the district's Committee on Special
Education to provide students and their families with
appropriate services. |

Steve Rossley, Director of Career Education
Steve has been with the district since 1972. Prior to his
role in the students services center, he taught business
education in the district for 22 years.
As the Director of Career
Education, Steve oversees and works with students who
are in the internship program. Among other
responsibilities, he arranges job shadowing and
career opportunities for interested students.
"I love working with
students because they keep you young—they transpose
their energy to you."
Steve attended Hudson
Valley Community College, Siena College and the College
of St. Rose, and has a bachelor's degree in Business
Education. He also is a graduate of Shenendehowa High
School. |

Leigh
Smith,
Intervention Counselor
Leigh
started her first year at Schuylerville in 2006. She
works with students when problems arise, helps mediate
group counseling and also provides individual student
sessions.
“I
enjoy providing a comfortable environment for students
to share their day-to-day experiences. And I feel that
it is important to recognize the unique strengths and
qualities in each student.”
Leigh
was a PINS counselor at Hudson City School District and
Taconic Hills School District prior to coming to
Schuylerville.
She
earned her master's degree in school counseling at
the College of Saint Rose, and a bachelor's degree
in psychology at Le Moyne. She also attended high school
at Rome Free Academy in Rome, NY. |
