The Women’s Select Chorus and Chamber Singers from
Schuylerville Jr.-Sr. High School will have an audience with New York
State legislators this week. They’ll be performing at the Capitol as
part of an advocacy program operated through the New York State School
Music Association (NYSSMA) during Music In Our Schools Month.
Jodi Leight, a Jr.-Sr. High School music teacher, went through an
application process so the students could perform, feeling this was an
important opportunity for student musicians. “This program features
music groups from all over the state who come to the Capitol to perform
every day for the entire month of March. I really wanted our students to
attend as a way to show our legislators what students can do if given
the opportunity,” she said.
March is Music In Our Schools Month, a time when music education becomes
the focus of schools across the nation. The purpose is to raise
awareness about the importance of music education for all children and
to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access
to music.
Schuylerville’s Women’s Select Chorus and Chamber Singers meet two
mornings each week at 7 a.m. to work on higher level music. Members are
selected based on auditions; they perform at concerts and community
events throughout the year. Forty-five members will share their musical
talents at the New York State Capitol on Friday, March 5.
“I am so lucky to work in Schuylerville, where our entire community
supports our music program,” Leight said.
